Potty Training for Dummies

Tips...advice...I am looking for some! I feel like I have NO idea what I'm doing...

Melia started using the potty about 6 months ago Id just stick her on there to get aquainted with it and she would occasionally go poop when I caught her in her "poop stance". She has gotton alot better at it but there is no consistancy what- so -ever and it's making me want to pull- my -hair out!!
Some days are better then others, Melia will tell me she has to go potty, but only if she's running around naked. If she has panties or clothes on she'll just pee where ever...ugh!!
It doesn't bother her to actually go on the toilet, but it's just trying to get her to tell me. Other {bad} days consist of me wiping pee off the floor, thank goodness for wood flooring!!
She is going through a really defiant stage where everything is NO or MINE so maybe I should wait until she's more willing? Should I do Pull-ups, or just let her run around with no bottoms on? What are my other options? Or maybe she's not ready yet...But I sure am. Any tips puh-leeeease!
Thanks!

  1. In my experience with my kids, it totally depends on the kid. If they are ready they will just do it and if not, they won't do it, not matter what you try! With Cade, we tried EVERYTHING for well over a year! I thought I was going to go crazy! He was kind of like Melia, but he was almost 4! Finally about a month after his 4th birthday, he just decided to be potty trained, even through the night. With Ambree, I wasn't ready to try with another kid yet, but she sure was! She just kind of did it on her own. It was strange. She is totally potty trained even through the nighe, and I didn't really even try. Anyway, I needed a kid like that after Cade. With Cade, I always felt like I was doing something wrong, but with Ambree I felt like a pro, even thought really it wasn't me, it was them. If I were you, I would just put her in pull ups and put her on the potty randomly throughout the day, but don't stress when she goes in her pull up. She will do it when she is ready. Anyway, tha't my take on it. Good Luck!

  2. The same happened with Vance and me. I finally realized that it was just going to have to happen when he was ready. It doesn't matter how hard you try, if they are not ready then it will not happen. Good luck.

  3. If she is waking up from naps or from night time dry then she is ready. Take her to the potty every 20-30 minutes. Keep certain books in the bathroom that you only read to her while in there. I've even painted Ryanne's toe nails while she sat on the potty! Just keep at it, soon it will just click for her. Sometimes i though that Ryanne was just testing me, seeing how consistant I was with it to see if this potty training thing was for real. good luck , i am going through it too!

  4. I've only done one so far but it was a good experience. I also think it depends on the child, when they are ready etc. Mallory was very easy though. About 4 months before she was potty trained I thought it was time but it ended up not to be. So 4 months later Mallory had her friend over from down the street and she was 3 months older than her and they were playing and the little girl said I need to go potty so she went into the bathroom and went pee and Mallory was standing there just watching(I think in amazement) and the next day Mallory asked me to wear panties and she's never had an accident since. Who knows what it will take for Melia. Good luck..maybe it's time, maybe it's not. Good luck.

  5. Ive been potty training for years now and am just getting the hang of it. Sometimes I make it to the toilet sometimes I don't and I'm ok with that. Ive tried pull-ups but they just don't make them in my size. I have written several letters to Pampers but have had no response from them. I get dirty looks out in public when I have my little "accidents" Ive gotten used to that. I don't know why people are so sensitive to that sort of thing, I mean its not like I'm doing it on purpose. I have found a support group though(PTA Potty Training Anonymous)where our motto is "WE JUST GOTTA GO PEE" They have been very helpful, but their mothers get a little upset when meetings run into their nap-times. So Melia, Just hang in there and maybe you will be like your Grandpa
where potty training will come a litte later in life. -Grandpa
